The current version of Chronicle is version 14. Since this was released as a new app in the App Store with version 10, there may be some still using version 9, which was labeled as Chronicle Pro in the App Store when it was sold. If you have macOS Big Sur or later, you should download version 14. It is the newest version, and is the only version that will get updated with new features. Version 9 has been discontinued, and the version that was sold in the App Store will cease to work on January 24, 2025. More details on each version are below.
Chronicle 14
Chronicle 14 is the newest version of Chronicle. It has the newest features, and will receive all feature updates going forward. It only supports Chronicle Cloud for syncing with the iPhone & iPad versions. It also has no additional cost. If you are subscribed to Chronicle Pro for iPhone and iPad, you can access your purchase on the Mac for free.
Chronicle 9
Chronicle 9 was available for a one-time purchase of $24.99 in the Mac App Store. Because it includes all the Pro features without a subscription, it has an up-front cost. It can sync with iCloud or Chronicle Cloud (if you have a subscription via the iPhone or iPad app)
It is compatible with Chronicle 14, and all new features of Chronicle for iOS, with some minor caveats:
- End Dates: End dates are not displayed or utilized in version 9, but the data is preserved if you sync with Chronicle Cloud. If you sync with iCloud, end date data will be lost.
- Last Day of Month Repeat Interval: This interval will display and behave properly on version 9, and when you log or skip payments, the repeat interval will behave as expected. However, if you edit and re-save a bill with this repeat interval on version 9, the interval will change to "Monthly", which is similar, but not quite the same.
Best Practices for Using Both Versions
We know that some people need to use both versions 9 and 10+ of Chronicle, especially if you have one Mac on Big Sur, and one not. For best results, please keep the following in mind:
- Only sync with Chronicle Cloud. Make sure iCloud is disabled on iPhone and on Mac, or loss of data can occur. See our article about Migrating to Chronicle Cloud.
- Do not make edits to bills on version 9. Logging payments, paying bills, or skipping payments is fine. Editing may result in loss of some bill information in rare cases.
